In his new Elvis film, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, director Baz Luhrmann is “taking care of business.”
The new musical biopic Elvis is one of our most-anticipated new movies of 2022, thanks to the tempting mix of showman director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet) portraying the life of the showman-extraordinaire singer/actor Elvis Presley.
Everything we know about the film has been put together from Luhrmann’s hints. We’re quite convinced it’ll be something spectacular, based on the tantalising glimpses of the film given in the ‘first-look’ teaser, photographs and comments published by Luhrmann on social media and in numerous interviews, and the presence of the always-reliable Tom Hanks.
When will Elvis Presley be released?
Elvis has a June 22, 2022 release date in the UK and other other territories, following delays caused by the epidemic. The Elvis film will be released in the United States two days later, on June 24. The film will be available to HBO Max customers 45 days following its theatrical debut.
The film will have its international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 17 to May 28. Strictly Ballroom (1992), Moulin Rouge (2001), and The Great Gatsby (2001) are three of Luhrmann’s feature films that he has screened at the Cannes Film Festival (2013).
Doja Cat’s Vegas is the opening track on the Elvis movie soundtrack.
If you’ve seen any of Baz Lurhmann’s films, you’ll know that he enjoys mixing influences and styles from different eras, and the Elvis picture appears to be no exception. “In Elvis, you’ll get classic Elvis, but we’re converting some of the music into a contemporary vibe with an array of wonderful guest musicians,” he explains as he plays the first tune from the Elvis soundtrack.
To hear Doja Cat’s Vegas, you’ll have to pay close attention to this clip from Lurhmann’s Instagram. Alternatively, you may watch the singer’s Coachella performance, which included the new song.
Who is in the Elvis ensemble?
The title role is played by Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles, Arrow). Colonel Tom Parker (Elvis’ domineering manager) is played by Tom Hanks, and Elvis’ wife Priscilla Presley is played by Olivia DeJonge, an Australian actress. Luke Bracey (Home and Away) portrays Jerry Schilling, Elvis Presley’s talent manager and a part of his “Memphis Mafia” (the close-knit group that supported Elvis in various ways from the start of his career).
Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter, Secretary) and Rufus Sewell (The Father, The Man in the High Castle) were originally cast as Elvis’ mother and father (Gladys and Vernon), but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts and were replaced by Helen Thomson and Richard Roxburgh, both Australian actors.
